「The Power of Now」 by Eckhart Tolle, first published by New World Library in 1999, continues to be a steady-seller after years on the New York Times bestseller list. Oprah recommended it on her show and Paris Hilton took it to prison. Despite its popularity, or perhaps living up to it, its message is quite powerful. Tolle suggests that we stop engaging and identifying with the endless “thinking” that prevents us from living in the present moment by training ourselves to exit the fiction of the Ego, in his terms a false self that we create to maintain a fabricated sense of who we are. Many of our troubles stem from the drive of this Ego to maintain its hold over us, even at the cost of intense pain, anxiety, and unhappiness. Tolle’s book thus touches on a core aspect of modern experience, mental stress and depression.

Tolle begins by describing his personal depression as a young man. Quite by chance, he noticed that there was something odd about his recurring thought: “I cannot live with myself.” The grammatical structure of this sentence suggested to him that there was a split between the “I” who was miserable and the “I” who could not live with that miserable “I.” This simple realization brought him unexplainable comfort and peace. The rest of the book is about how we too can learn to distance ourselves from the “I” ruled by too much thinking about past and future, and hence unable to fully live in the present moment. This finding is not unique to Tolle. Type in “mindfulness,” or “living in the present,” and you will see that age-old techniques, largely from Eastern wisdom traditions, have become very popular as tools for meditation practices in the West. Tolle combines a wide range of traditions from East and West, including the Bible, to argue that mere human rationality is a very poor shadow projection of true human identity. Once we learn to dis-identify ourselves from the endless “thinking” of the Ego that produces so much anxiety and unhappiness, we are on the road to recovery.

What does recovery look like from Tolle’s perspective? Firstly, we no longer identify so much with our suffering, or what he calls the pain body—an amalgamation of all the fear and hurt we have woven together to create the false Ego. Anger is a key strategy of the Ego to feed its burning sense of self-righteousness to survive and rule. This Ego needs to be fed by constant thought and stopping that thought process is the first and only step to breaking the cycle of false identification and drama. Tolle calls for practice in becoming the conscious observer of the false Ego. He uses the word “Enlightenment” in a very different way than in traditional Western philosophy. True consciousness or enlightenment comes from disassociation with the Ego and the pain body and gaining touch with the true self. For Tolle, our body is crucial because it is the gateway into the “now” or the present that is beyond the thought constructions of space-time. This is the realm of the spiritual that has virtually been made to disappear from the modern process of rational enlightenment Max Weber has called the “disenchantment of the world.” It is notable that the spiritual can only be accessed by a recovery of a deep sense of inhabiting the body.

Tolle, like other spiritual writers, urges us to reconnect and re-ground ourselves in a reality that is much more powerful than the reality carved out by mere thought and language. That realm is the realm of what he calls true consciousness where we are supremely alive to the only time we truly ever have, the “now” of the present moment. Focusing on this now by surrendering ourselves to what is and anchoring ourselves in our inner body allows us to distance ourselves from the world of surface appearances and false consciousness. This does not mean that we give up on the practical details and practices that help us live our daily lives. Being alive to the present, according to this argument, allows us to maintain a connection with a truer reality, permitting us to participate in a larger existence than our limited and ultimately fictional existence as isolated and individual selves. The turn to an inner body that is connected seamlessly with the entire universe presents us with a liberating alternative. It is in this consciousness or presence in a self beyond mere time and ego that we can enjoy “the power of now” that serves as the title to the book. The guilt we so often harbor towards the past and the fear we harbor regarding the future are all-important building blocks of the Ego we can free ourselves from only by focusing on the present, the now that is not haunted by fictional time.

As someone who has engaged too long in compulsive thinking, I have found Tolle’s call to distance myself from compulsive thinking a most timely challenge to break from what the poet John Donne calls the “rags of time.” Think of Salvador Dali’s melting clocks or Henri Matisses’s clock without hands. Regimented, productive clock-time more than anything else has prevented us who live the modern world from living in the presence of life. I invite everyone who reads this column to give this book a chance to break from time, thought, Ego. The audio version read by the author himself is also a very good companion and can be listened to at any point, in any order, for a salutary break from the iron cage of our reality. This little book has much to teach us in simple and lucid language that is not at all incompatible with deep intellectual engagement.
